Topic: The Starting of a Change
People viewed women in different ways. They were first viewed as a group of people who couldn’t handle the law, government and politics. Although in their opinion, men alone couldn’t make fair laws, they thought that having both genders were for a better unbiased up of people who couldn’t law. There were a few biased laws against women such as the men were allowed to sell everything without the woman’s consent and leave his children and wife with nothing. This was legal yet, there was a law for women to treat a man’s goodwill. The women, tired of being discriminated, wanted the same rights and opportunities as men. The men found their goal enjoyable and underestimated the women. While for women there first step to equality was the right to vote. Surprisingly, the suffrage movement in Canada had a sporadic fashion to it. (Suffrage meaning: the right to vote in political elections) Such as arguments, petition, organized demonstration and even used humorous plays. Nellie McClung used the money earned from the play to pay the campaign for the right to vote. Although during World War 1, they won the right to vote, it wasn’t for the public offices. Not until 1920 did women discrimination lessen as the Dominion Election Act allowed the women to run for it. The following year Agnes Macphil became the first women elected for the federal parliament. Starting from then, then women were more viewed as equals. |
