Topic: The Important People and Victories of the Women
Many important achievements occurred in this time period for the women. One of the most important people who made this change in Canada was Emily Howard Stowe who later on became the first woman doctor in1876. She organized the Toronto’s Women’s Literacy Club but the name was foolishly untrue. This club was actually an “Ontario’s Women Suffrage” group for 40 years. In 1883, the “Toronto’s Women’s Suffrage” joined her aid as the fight for the right to vote went on. Shortly after, the “Dominion of Women’s Franchise” joined her in 1889. Even through all the petition and bills, the Ontario lawmakers blocked these, thinking the public agreed with them. More and more organizations began to support them like the “Women’s Cristian Temperance Union” in the 1890s and the respected and influenced “National Council of Woman” spoke on this matter in 1910. Through all their hard work, Manitoba became the first province to allow their voting rights on January 28th of 1916. Then followed Saskatchewan on March 14th, Alberta on April 19th and British Columbia on April 5th of 1917. Ontario came the following year on April 12th. By 1918 all females were allowed to attain franchise at the age of 21 and over. Quebec however waited until the 1940s for their campaign to win. At the end, women all got their rights to vote off their hard work, courage will.
