Major Battles
Canada was forced
into the war because they were under Britain rule, so once Britain joined the
war, Canada had to as well – NO EXCEPTIONS! There were 4 major battles of WW1
such as: Battle of Ypres, Battle of Somme, Battle of Vimy Ridge, and the Battle
of Passchendale. The Battle of Ypres took place in Belgium April 1915. The
Ypres was Canada’s first battle including chlorine gas with Canadians holding
their positions with bravery having 6 035 Canadians die in the first 48 hours.
The Battle of Somme took place in France July 1916. The Somme took 4 ½ months
of fighting, killing and gained 6 miles of land. During this battle, 90% of
Newfound Land was killed with 68 citizens survived. The Somme was the bloodiest
battle of all having 24 000 Canadians dead. The Battle of Vimy Ridge took place
in Germany April 1917. Canadians fought in the Vimy Ridge as individuals,
winning the battle with 10 602 Canadians dead. The Battle of Passchendale took
place in Belgium May 1917. Passchendale took 8 months of fighting, gaining 5
miles of land. Passchendale was a low ground territory flooded with mud. In
this battle, 140 000 Canadians was found dead. Therefore, even though Canada
was forced into WW1, in the end, the deaths were terrible but with a total of
11 miles were gained for Canada.
