Topic: The Discrimination of Women
In the late 1800s to 1914, women and men were treated differently because of their difference in gender. The younger girls, although allowed to go to elementary and secondary school, only a few post-secondary schools accepted women. The girls were unfortunately ineligible to take leadership positions and were considered lesser than their brothers. Women were only allowed to work if they weren’t married and their husbands were considered failure if they took jobs after marriage. They had fewer promotions than men and had a lower salary then them. Women were expected to be at home and caring for their husband and children. They had no rights on voting and they were forbidden in the federal and provincial government. Not only were they not allowed to claim homesteads- aboriginal women were to lose their status in law if they married a man that wasn’t aboriginal. Unlike the men who were free to marry any women and keep their status in law. There are many more but these are the few very important ways we, women, were discriminated.
